NB Letter from Mrs Vera Ismay dated 6th October 1992 enclosed the above transcript from a tombstone from behind the vestry. NDFHS Ref C121 gives same data except interred "THERE" not "here"."

In mememory of Margaret wife of George Ismay, Master Mariner, who departed this life October 8th 1782, aged 39 years. Also 3 of their children viz. George Margaret and Sinclair. George Ismay died at Greenland July 15th and was interred here August 9th 1788, aged 44 years. Ellison Ismay Gardener, son of the above, died November 1st 1863, aged 85 years. "Vol 1 Page CXXX gives
The Greenland Fishery has never been carried on to any great extent from this port (Newcastle); but, ever since 1751, the trade has existed with various success. In that year, the "Newcastle Whale Fishing Company" was established, and in March, 1752, the ship the Swallow sailed for Greenland, and returned on the 7th of July with four whales. There are present three ships sent annually to the fisheries from the river Tyne."

"The Daily Universal register for 20 April 1786 states:
Extract of a letter from Kirkwell, March 28
"On Sunday the 26th ult ......Same day, the Kingston of and from Shields, for Davis' Straights, Ismay, master, who sailed for the westward, was put back by stress of weather, under jury-masts, with the loss of four crew.'
On Sunday the 26 inst, arrived here, in a disabled condition, the ship Kingston, of Newcastle, Captain George Ismay, after been as far to the westward as long 36 - 30, on a voyage to Davis' Straits. On the 8th current they met a very hard gale of wind the N.N.W. and next day the gale still continuing, a heavy sea struck the ship and carried awaysix boats, several yards, spars and other articles, off her deck an dleft her on her beam ends, nearly waterllogged which obliged Captain Ismay to cut away her main and mizzen sails and soon afterwards four of the men were washed overboard. He was therefore under the necessity, as soon as the storm abated, of returning to Britain to refit the ship."."5Newspapers - The Times.

Another import from Shields was George Ismay, formerly master of "John and Margaret", who took the "Friendship " from Whitby to the Davies Straits in 1776. All of the principal officers in Ismay's crew, with the exception of the mate, Nicholas Hodgson, came from Shields and Newcastle; the majority had served with him on "John and Margaret" the year before

"Be it remembered that the eighth day of January in the 25th year of the reign of our sovereign lord George the third by grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King Defender of the Faith and theyear of our Lord One thousand seventen hundred and eighty five. Came George Ismay of Whickham aforesaid Master and Mariner out of court, to wit, at the town and county of Newcastle upon Tyne before Charles Wren, Gentleman, Steward of the said manor and took of the Lord one moiety or half part (the whole into two parts equally divided) of one messauge with the edifaces upon a certain parcel of land in Swalwell containing in length 40 feet and bredth sixty feet which same messauge contains in length ten feet more or less and heretofore in the possession of Samuel Bainbridge afterewards in the occupation of Thomas Saint and Archibald Dixon and late in the possession of Alice Ronnison Widow. In which {Tompest} Ronnison of Swalwell aforesaid Mason, who had survived Michael Ronnison his late brother deceased had right all his estate rights, claims, interest and demands did surrender and quitclaim into the hands of the lord the use and behoof of the said George Ismay of Whickham. To hold to the said George Ismay of Whickham his sequels in right and assigns according to the custom of the said manor. Rendering therefore yearly at the usual terms as formerley was - wont to be paid for the same and doing to the lord and his neighbours those things which ought and thereupon he is admitted tenent."
