Hastings Lionel Ismay, First Baron (1887 - ), British Soldier and Administrator, was born in India and educated at Charterhouse and Sandhurst. He served on the N.W. frontier of India and in the first world war. He was the Assistant Secretary to the Committee of the Imperial Defense 1926 - 1933, Deputy Secreatary 1936 - 1938, and Secretary in 1938 and Military Secretary to the cabinet 1940-1945, accompanying Churchill on many of his journey's abroad. In 1951 he became Secretary for Commonwealth relations in the Conservative Government and accompanied the Prime Minister to Washington in January 1952. On 12 March 1952 he was appointed the first Secretary General of NATO in Paris. He was made K.C.B. in 1940, C.H. in 1945, G.C.B. in 1946 and a peer in 1947."7L.G. He was promoted to Maj. Gen in 1939, Lt. Gen. 1942 and Gen. 1944 He was known to his contempories by the nickname of "Pug", He was created C.B. 1931, Baron Ismay of Wormington, co. Gloucester, 14 Jan 1947 and K.G. 1957; mada P.C. 1951."8Army Lists.

Lady Ismay
Lady Ismay, widow of General Lord Ismay, KG, GCB. CH, DSO. Deputy Secretary (Military) to the War Cabinet 1940-45 and the first Secretary-General of Nato 1952-57, died on January 9
She was Laura Kathleen daughter of H.G. Clegg of Wormington Grange, Worcestershire. Her mother was the daughter of Jospeh Field, a brother of Marshall Field, the notable American merchant and store proprietor. Joseph Field managed the family's interests in England. Lady Ismay (Darry) met "Pug" Ismay in the course of a lawn tournament. They were married in 1921. Lord Ismay died in 1965.
There were three daughters."
