44. WIlliam Ismay
On H.J. Vernon's resignation the Dean (A.P. Stanley) and Chapter of Westminster presented WIlliam Ismay, M.A., of Emannual College, Cambridge, who was instituted on March 6th, 1877. Ordained deacon in 1871 and priest in 1872 by the Bishop of London, he had previously been curate of St. Stephen's, Canonbury, from 1871 to 1873, and of St Mark's, Hamilton Terrace, St John's WOod, from 1873 to 1877. During his incumbency at Eckington the church was extensively restored and the organ-chamber added to it. He was Rural Dean of PErshore from 1908 to 1919, and an Honorary Canon of Worcester from 1913. Her resigned the living of Eckington in November 1919, and retired to Newland, Malvern. He died ion May 11th, 1922, aged 76, and was buried in Newland churchyard. The east window of the chancel at Eckington was filled with stained glass as a memorial to him.
The outstanding characteristics of the late Canon Ismay were his saintliness of character and transparent sincerity. That he ever regarded the duties of his high calling with deep seriousnees was apparent not only in the consistency of the life he lived, but even in his appearance, and the very atmosphere of his pressence. His tall fragile form, deeply lined pale ascetic face, and his detached manner of speaking allbespoke study, high resolve, and rigid self discipline.... Canon Ismay was a man whose memory is cherished as an inspiration to whatever is loftiest in word or deed.
A thoughtful teacher in word, he taught yet more by his devoted, brave and steadfast life."
