Quiet Landlord Dies
Wigton's best known former landlord has died peacefully at 68. Bobby Ismay was born and bred in Wigton and, although he was a quiet and unassuming, a measure of the respect in which he was held is the fact that the balcony of St. Mary's church had to be opened to accomodate the mourners at his funeral service
Booby and his widow Molly were married for 41 years and they ran the Lion and Lamb Hotel from June 1962 to October 1990. Molly recalls that he was always known as "the bald headed man with the pipe"
Bobby was agreat nature lover and an authority on wild birds. He also loved walking the fells and, in younger days played rugby for Wigton
He loved his garden, flowers in particular, and he was a lover of televised sport.
He is remembered as a highly respected landlord and he never allowed swearing in the pub. Despite his reticence his widow received over 200 condolence cards from well-wishers.
In his last two years he dervied great joy from his grandchildren, Ami, four and Adam, two.
Booby is survived by Molly and their daughters Diane and Helen."
