The celebrated miser, John Ismay, was born at Burgh on Sands on March 1, 1747. His father, the Rev Thomas Ismay, Was vicar of Burgh on Sands from 1739 to his death on May 20 1786, when he was in his seventy seventh year. John came to London with only five pounds in his pocket and for some time acted as a clerk to his only brother, a hop merchant in Southwark."

Transactions of the CWAAS Vol 22 in an article on the documents of Grinsdale & Kirkandrews Parish gives the following information.
The vicar of Burgh for half the 18th century was Thomas Ismay who married a Wilson of Burgh; according to Whellan his granddaughter, Mrs French of Chelsea, was a benefactor of the parish in the 19th century. pgs 260 & 270

1726, 12th April. Thomas Sibson died on this day leaving his wife Isabell..... John, the second son above, succeeded to the property, having previously married Ruth, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Story of Kirkbampton; died 9 Sept 1739 and had issue John, born 22nd July 1727: married Jane daughter of the Rev Thomas Ismay of Burgh."
