"Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaelogical Society Volume 81 page 45 states:-
"ISMAY. Thomas Ismay, of Aikton, yeoman, was father of the Rev. Joesph Ismay (1708-78) who was educated at Morland and Kirby Longsdale Grammar School. He was ordained 1736 and was Vicar of Mirfield (Y) 1739-1778.
He was keenly interested in Botany and genealogy and corresponded with John Ismay, of London who wrote to him as follows:
" Revd. Sir,
I take this opportunity of sending you the original of coat of arms, since that which you have is deficient in three particulars, viz.-
That which you call a cross croslet is a cross patee fitchee. You have no crest and you want the motto. I have made diligent search in the Herald's Office to the Norman Conquest but cannot meet with any Cumberland, neither is there any to be found in Herald's book, but only of Devonshire. And our arms are taken from an ancient monument of the Ismays in Peterox's Church in Dartmouth in the Reign of King Edward I, and is still perfect in the said Church.
The Ismay's paternal coat therefore is -
Azure, A chevron or between two besants or in chief and a cross patee fitchee or. The crest, a Helmet and the motto in English - "Be mindful"
"My good and worthy friend Mr. Jno. Ismay who obliged me with the original of our Arms, got me them painted on canvas by a herald in London for 11s., and also engraved on a silver seal for 12s. He likewise made me a present of a china punchbowl which measures at the top in diameter 11 1/2 inches and contains upwards of 4 quarts of liquor.Our coat of Arms is blazoned on the outside by the Chinese in very lively colours, with other beautiful decorations. It was brought from China at the request of my friend by the ship Edgecombe, Captain Teddimain Commander, in June 1754, and I received it at the Vicarage in Mirfield on the 30th August following.,
With a fine disregard of heraldic procedure and without worrying as to whether he had ... any right to these arms, he forthwith adopted them as his own (Charles Drage: Family Story, 1969)."7Publications - The Thoresby Society.

Introduction.
"The patronage of both livings { Mirfield & Hartsford} was in the hands of the Armitages of Kirklees and as Ismay mentions incidentally that he was living at Kirklees in 1738 it seems likely that he was then, and perhaps for some years earlier, engaged as tutor or chaplain, or both, in the household of Sir Samuel Armitage.
Some details of his family can be gathered from the published volume part ii of the Parish Register of Mirfield and among the memoranda at the end are four characteristic records of disastrous floods signed by Ismay. But it is a
memorial tablet in the Church which throws most light on his character. It
reads:-
In memory of the Rev. Joseph Ismay, born in the county of Cumberland, B.A., of Christ's College, in Cambridge, vicar of this Church into which he was inducted A.D. 1739, this plate was erected. He was a singular lover of antiquity and studied botany, a sincere Christian & in every relation such as claimed the esteem & goodwill of all who new him. He died June 21st 1778, aged 70 years & lies interred beneath the altar table.(2)

She was a good wife an indulgent parent a kind mistress a faithful friend a good neighbour a good chrisian and one of the best of women She was tender and loving to her family, affable and courteous to all She breathed her last without o much as a struggle, like the silent and well spent flame of an expiring taper In a word she gently fell asleep and will awake to endless Glory in the morning of the resurrection.

Exon of the Will of Thomas Ismay late of Eland p. Halifax deced was granted to Rebehah Ismay widow & relicit & Richard Ismay son Exectric & Executor by Nelson 23 April 1773.
First of all, my Will and Mind is that all my just debts, Funeral Expenses and Probate of this my Will be fully paid as soon as conveniently may be after my decease by my executors hereinafter mentioned.
Also I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Ismay the sum of five shillings to be paid to him upon demand
Also I give and bequeath to me son lancelot Bowes the sum of five pounds to be paid to him when he shall attain to the age of twenty one years. And I also give and bequeath unto my said son Lancelot Bowes all my wearing Apparel.
Also I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Bowes the sum of five pounds to be paid to her when she shall attain to the age of twnety one years
And all the Rest, Residue and Remainder of my wordly goods and effects whatsoever ^ (except such as my wife brought me which I give her again) I give devise and bequeath unto my Wife Rebecca Ismay and to my son Richard Ismay to be divided equally betwixt them Share and share alike. And I hereby nominate and appoint my said Wife Rebecca Ismay and my said Son Richard Ismay joint executors of this my last will and Testament.
In witness thereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Thirtieth Day of April One thousand seven hundred and seventy
