 One Night
 In
 Beech, N.Dak.
I was traveling on Greyhound from Montana to Minnesota for the Thanksgiving holidays when we ran in to a ground-blizzard just out of Glendive, Montana. Seeing the road was near impossible...it looked almost as though we were driving in the clouds. This might sound like some fun to some....but not for the bus driver and not for the few of us awake to see what she was having to deal with. Sandy ( the bus driver ) did a beautiful job of driving that night...keeping us safe and in many instances comfortable enough to still sleep. Upon reaching Beech, N.Dak. she decided to pull off the road and take a break. We were due to stop in Dickenson for a late dinner break...but after dealing with the road...no one griped about her needing to stop for awhile.
There were quite a few truck drivers pulled over at the truck stop already when we pulled in. As we drank some coffee and made phone calls....Sandy was busy checking on road conditions and such. It wasn't too long before the word came back that the roads were closed going East. The sheriff found us a place to park and told Sandy he would let us know when the roads opened back up.
We found ourselves parked among 200 or more truckers for the night. They were parked on both sides of the road and at the high school parking lot as well...all waiting out the storm.
About 4 that morning I went in to the truck stop to get a cup of coffee. There were several truck drivers and other stranded people in the restaurant. The feeling in that building was one of shared trouble...people enjoying each others company. Many of the workers in that truck stop took travelers home with them that night and gave them places to sleep. The comraderie was great...what a feeling....it permiated the place.
I think maybe Great Spirit had a plan that night....one that brought people together to remember what's important.
There were 32 of us on that bus that night....we spent 14 hours in Beech....14 hours getting to know one another. We became like a family that night in many ways. There were only a couple of people gripeing...because we all knew it was no-ones fault. When we reached Minneapolis...one guy failed to get on the bus again in time....the bus came back to get him....amazing huh? I just know in my heart that the family on that bus told the bus driver....no way...he's been with us this far....he will finish his trip. *smile*
