The Anatolian Shepherd is native to Asia Minor. It protects flocks and serves as a shepherd's companion. On the high Anatolian Plateau, where summers are hot and very dry and winters are cold, the Anatolian Shepherd Dogs live outside all year round. For centuries the ancestors of the Anatolian Shepherd were used as a combat dog in war and for hunting. It was particularly valued for the victorious battles it could fight with wolves. As a sheepdog, it was bothered by neither fatigue nor bad weather. Today it is still used as a sheep dog as well as a guard dog.

Our dog Maggie pictured above likes to accompany my wife Irene when she and my daughter Lynne go out to our fenced backyard. The ladies begin filling all the holes Maggie has been digging. Soon as they get a couple of holes filled along comes Maggie and starts emptying them again. Irene says she thinks Maggie wishes to dig a rather large, deep hole so she can crouch down in the hole and guard our backyard. We wonder if that is how Anatolians do it while herding sheep.

Maggie loves small children and will spend quality time playing with them and forever keeps an eye on the children

Our grand-children and great-grand-children jump for joy when they are told "We are going to see Grandma." A beautiful Anatolian pet awaits to play with them.
