Nursery/Younger Toddlers

The Provider/Child Ratio:

There are a total of 6 infants ranging in age from 6 weeks to 12 months old and two teachers in the Nursery. There are a total of 9 toddlers from 12 months to 24 months in the Younger Toddler room with three teachers and one student intern.

What Goes On During the Day:

The Nursery/Younger Toddler rooms stress sensory activities (smell, touch, see, listen and taste). They let the children explore and discover through play. Babies are bottle fed, changed, rocked to sleep and loved by each of the teachers.

For indoor activities, they use playdough, paints, water, sand, oats, blocks, books, dress up, rattles, riding and push toys, climbing, songs/music just to name a few. Learning is done through play.

Outdoor activities include playing in/on the sandbox, bikes, swings, water play, shadow play, buggy rides, watching birds, bugs, and airplanes and much more.

Nap time is usually between the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the toddlers.

Infants and toddlers sit at tables designed for family-style dining for social interaction. Infants and toddlers are provided plates, cups, spoons/forks that they use for meals. It is a wonderful opportunity for conversation between the children and the teachers.

Can You Read This: (See below for the interpretation)

Teachers learn and demonstrate simple sign-language commands as a part of language learning for infants and toddlers. For example, some simple signs are: need help, want more to eat, thank you, walk, crackers, milk, I'm tired, I'm hungry, stop, yes, please, mom, dad, and the like. It is a way for non-verbal infants and toddlers to express their thoughts and needs to teachers and their friends at school. Parents are also using sign language and incorporating it at home. (Interested in learning more on signing with your infant/toddler? Go visit http://www.handspeak.com). What did that spell? Mommy.
