TOK Perception Presentation

Objective:  To research an area of sense and perception and present what you have learned in class.

Groups: You should research your particular area (e.g. the eye, the nose, visual cortex...) in pairs. You will present your results in groups representing: vision, hearing, smelling, taste, touch and proprioception. So, the pair who did eyes and those who did the visual cortex will present their results together as vision.

Format of presentation:
Oral presentation with visual aids and demonstrations.

Guiding questions:
  1. What is your particular sense/perception composed of? (E.g. vision is composed, in part, of our ability to discern color; hearing is composed, in part of our ability to detect tone, etc.)
  2. How does it work? That is, what is th physiology and function of the sensory organ (tongue, nose, etc.) and how are the signals from that organ interpreted by the brain?
  3. What are some examples (try to include demonstrations) of the proper functioning of your particular sense/perception? (E.g. the ability of the tongue to discern sweet can be shown by dabbing the tongue with samples of sugar solution to find out where and how we sense this flavor.)
  4. What are some examples (try to include demonstrations) of the failure of your particular sense/perception? (E.g. the hand's ability to discern hot and cold can be made to fail if we first dunk the hand in very hot water and then into warm water. The perception will be that the warm water is actually cold.)
Lateness and lack of preparation: Presentations will be chosen randomly starting Friday, August 20th until they are completed. If you are not prepared to present and announce so at the beginning of a class your group will be docked 2 marks. If you claim to be prepared and are chosen to present you MUST present. Failure to present will mean that you receive NO MARKS. In other words, if you are not prepared you are much better off declaring so and getting the 10% reduction.

You will be marked out of 20 according to the following rubric:

Presentation

We were well prepared. We displayed confidence in our knowledge. Our presentation was engaging and accurate.
We were mostly prepared and got nervous at times. We usually held the class's attention.
We were noticeably scattered and nervous. The class got fidgety.
We winged it and showed little preparation. The class noticed.
Understanding/Explanation of the physiology and function of the sense/perception We understood and explained well our sense/perception.
We usually understood and explained our sense/perception well.
We were often confused.
We showed little if any understanding.
Proper function of sense/perception
We explained the proper function of our sense/perception well using demonstrations. We explained the proper funtion of our sense/perception fairly well using words only.
We explained some of how our sense/perception functions properly.
We ignored the question regarding the proper function of our sense/perception .
Failure of sense/perception
We explained the failure of our sense/perception to function well using demonstrations. We explained the failure of our sense/perception fairly well using words only.
We explained some of how our sense/perception can fail.
We ignored the question regarding the failure of our sense/perception to function.
