  1. Sketch the “Map of the Physical Universe.”
  2. Draw a simple machine of ideal mechanical advantage 2.0 and an efficiency of 80% being used to lift a mass of 10 kg.  Show and label the effort and resistance forces and distances and any other quantities that help identify the machine (fulcrum, height, lever arms, number of ropes, etc.).
  3. Draw an example for each of the other two categories of simple machine you did not do in question 2.  Assume an ideal mechanical advantage of 2.0 and make sure you have shown enough quantities to prove this.  Do NOT use effort force or resistance force.
  4. Define macroscopically and microscopically and give examples of:

    1. Non-uniform mixture
    2. Covalent compound
    3. Element
  1. Questions from the history of atomic models:
    1. Who discovered the neutron?
    2. What experimental evidence did Rutherford depend on?
    3. Who performed the “cathode ray tube” experiment?
    4. What did it show? introduced the concept of quantized orbits for the electron?
    5. Outline the contributions (models and experiments) of one of the figures in the history of atomic models.  Also include who came before and after them.
  2. The modern atomic model:
    1. Using a clearly labeled diagram outline the modern model of the atom, including info on the regions (names and sizes) and particles (their names, locations, relative charges and masses). 
    2. What is the nature of the electron orbitals in the modern view? 
    3. Name two fundamental ways in which this modern view differs from those before it.
  3. Balance and give the reaction type:
    1. KI(aq) + Pb(NO3) 2(aq) ------>  PbI 2(s) + KNO3(aq)
    2. Ba + CaCO3 ------>  Ca + BaCO3
    3. C2H4(l) + O2(g)  ------>  CO2(g) + H2O(g)
    4. For all of the reactants above (a to c) mention whether they are elements, or covalent or ionic compounds.
  4. Give the mass of each of the following (1 amu = 1.66 x 10–27 kg):
    1. CO2 in atomic mass units.
    2. The mass of water in amu.
    3. The mass of nitrogen as it is usually found in kilograms.
  5. Consider the following reactions as done in the lab:
    1. Was the thermite reaction exothermic or endothermic? Did it have a high or low activation energy?  Sketch the energy diagram for the reaction.
    2. List four ways that you could increase the rate of the reaction for the iron placed in copper (II) sulfate.
  6. Discuss one of the science fair exhibits (other than your own) in terms of how it uses the scientific method.
