Physical Science 9 Practice Test for Simple Machines

Consider the pulley, inclined plane and lever.

  1. Choose two of the three and sketch and label an example of them that has an ideal mechanical advantage of 3.0 showing whatever is required to make your drawing complete enough to prove that you should have a mechanical advantage of 3.0 (lever arms, fulcrum, heights and lengths, etc.).
  2. Assume that a weight of 10 kg is hung from your devices and your hand applies 40 N to lift it.  Add and label these on your diagram as resistance and effort forces.  Calculate the actual mechanical advantage and the efficiency for either machine.
  3. If the machine moves the mass by 10cm, how far will you have to move your hand?  Calculate the input and output work.
