Physical Science Assignment #2

Open the page here in a new window to do the following:

  1. What is the acceleration of the car in the first graph?
  2. How can you calculate the velocity of an object from its position vs time graph?
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and try Practice A. Look at the answer provided to check if you are understanding it. Now try Practice B and without looking at the given answer write down your description.

Open the page here in a new window to do the following:

  1. Which car is traveling with greater speed? How can you see this only by looking at the graph?
  2. In words describe what point on the graph represents when the red car passes the blue car? At what time and position does this occur?
  3. At what time is the blue car at a position of 20 m? The red car at 120 m?.

Open the page here in a new window to do the following:

  1. Drag the bike slowly to the right at a fairly constant rate. Describe the shape of the graph.
  2. Reset the page (you may have to reload it) and drag the bike slowly to the left at a fairly constant rate. Describe the shape of the graph. Which direction is positive in this program?
  3. Reset the page again and drag the bike slowly to the right and then the left. Describe the shape of the graph. What is the relationship between the direction the bike is travelling and the slope of the graph?
  4. Reset the page again and drag the bike slowly and then more quickly to the right and then the left. What is the relationship between the speed the bike is travelling and the slope of the graph?
  5. Type the answers to questions in an e-mail with the subject line reading "Asst 2 PS9" and send it to [email protected]. If the system is slow you can write the answers on a sheet of paper to hand in. One assignment per person.

If you are done early you can go
here and play with the applet. See how many ways you can you make the two runners meet exactly in the middle.
