Physics 12 Circuits Practice Test

You will be allowed an equation sheet for the test.  Along with the equations we have studied since the last quiz your sheet SHOULD include the values for the Coulomb constant (k), the gravitational constant (G), the mass and charge of the electron and the proton, and the resistivity of nichrome.

1        Consider a proton at the center of the Earth and an electron at the surface of the Earth.

a)      What is the gravitational force between the two particles?

b)      What is the electrical force between the two particles?

c)      How massive would the proton have to be so the two forces would be equal?

2        A region of space has a constant electric field of 5.0N/C directed north.

a)      What force would a proton experience in this field?

b)      What force would an electron experience?

c)      If the electron travels 11.o cm north what is its change in electric potential energy?

d)      What is its change in voltage?

3        Explain how a gold foil electroscope works.

4        A 12 V car battery is connected across 10.0 m of 0.50 mm diameter wire of unknown material.  The battery delivers 15.0 C charge through the wire in 10.0 min. Find the current in the wire over the 10.0 min time span.

5        A 9.0 V battery delivers 0.15 amps current to a resistor.

a)      Draw the circuit diagram for the circuit showing the sign of the battery terminals and the direction of the current flow.

b)      Calculate the resistance of the resistor.

c)      Draw the circuit you would have used in the lab to find the voltage and current.

6        What is the diameter of a 5.0 m length piece of nichrome wire of resistance  4.0 Ω?

7        A hair dryer of power 1000 W is plugged into a 220 V outlet.

a)      How much current does it draw?

b)      What is its resistance?

c)      How much energy does it consume in kW-h after operating for 6 min?
