Report on : Sunday afternoon with Al - February 10, 2002 Al Anderson, CCSJ vice-president, musician, and community activist, gave a wonderful program about growing up on Scotts Run. He told stories about his life and interspersed the stories with songs, with Paul Becker as the accompanist. Emily Spieler gave a short presentation about CCSJ's work to the diverse crowd of CCSJ members, WVU students, and other interested folks. Please note that, contrary to the story that appeared in the Dominion Post on Monday, February 11, with a headline of "Candidate Anderson Found His Voice," this was not a campaign rally for Al Anderson, who is a candidate for the House of Delegates. This was planned before Al announced he would be a candidate, and Emily has written a letter to the editor of the Dominion Post to clarify this. Many thanks to the steering committee members who organized this event! |

Report on current projects CCSJ is working on putting together resources on social and economic justice issues to be made available to schools and members of the community and (hopefully) to be housed at the Morgantown Public Library. Some funds have been raised to pay for materials. The group is currently gathering lists of possible resources and reviewing the currently available materials. If you would like to work on this, contact Judy Cohen, 292-0072, [email protected] or Jackqueline Moseley, 296-1415. A committee is meeting to discuss some issues of economic inequality and economic justice in the Morgantown area. | Hate crimes statute: Many of you know that the West Virginia legislature is discussing amending the state's hate crime legislation to add disability and sexual orientation to the list of protected classes currently included in the law. The current classes are race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, political affiliation, or sex. This is House Bill 2354, which is now in the House Judiciary Committee, and Barbara Evans Fleischauer is one of the sponsors of this bill. For information about this amendment, please see the West Virginia Lesbian and Gay Coalition website. | ||||||
