When the series starts, Shinji is called apon by his father to be the pilot of Eva Unit 01. However, Shinji is not the most heroic character of this time and the idea of being stuck inside a giant robot and risking his life against an even larger 'Angel' doesn't exactly appeal to him. Although, his mind is changed when he sees the substitute pilot, Rei, who is in no fit state to pilot the Eva. This is the beginning of an unusual bond between Shinji and his Eva and his synch ratios seem abnormally high for a pilots first time in an Eva. This strange bond is also shown when the Eva re-activates itself without any power to save Shinji's life on a number of occasions. Perhaps it's more than just a heap of metal, eh?
Shinji's character isn't really one of the strongest and he could fit the description of a total wuss quite easily. He also has trouble getting close to others and he fears what others think about him. This is a result of his mother's death and being abandoned by his father at an early age. However, he does try to get close to the characters of his father, Asuka and Rei but he seems to fail. One character who opens up to Shinji is Misato, who Shinji lives with in Tokyo 3. |
