Shanghai Noon
Directed by:
Starring: Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson
Lucy Liu
R: PG-13
Jackie Chan rides onto the big screen once again, literally. He plays an Imperial Guard from the
Forbidden City in China in this 19th century "East meets West" comedy flick.
"Shanghai Noon" has a simple story behind it, rescue the damsel in distress. The damsel in this
Western comedy is the Princess Pei-Pei (played by Lucy Liu: Ally McBeal) who was tricked into
making the journey to America, is then held for ransom in a mining community. Of course
the only one capable of getting her back is Mr. Jackie Chan.
For all that Shanghai Noon sets out to be I have to give it credit. First hand experience of sitting
in the theater and having problems with the people behind me because they are laughing too loud
speaks volumns. "Shanghai Noon" doesn't set out to dazzle you with amazing specail effects, or a story
that leaves you in a daydream as you leave, and if people can accept that, then more will see it for the
light hearted comedy that it is. It is in no way a serious film, thank God, for then it would truly be horrible.
Very simple, very funny, "Shanghai Noon" is nice transition from the more serious films on the big
screen. I was still in a daze from Gladiator, but "Shanghai Noon" quickly put a smile back on my face.
