The Sequoyah Indians have developed an outstanding tradition in track, but this year's squad has accomplished a rare feat -- the Indians brought home the school's first regional title since 1979. Sequoyah amassed 153 team points, outdistancing runner-up Spiro by 25 points. The Lady Indians were also strong, finishing fifth and qualifying six girls for the Class 2A State Tournament. The Indians will send nine players to State. Sequoyah took three of the top four spots in the 400 meters, with Dustin Reese finishing second, while Brandon Johnson and Solomon HorseChief finished third and fourth, respectively. The Indians also took three of the top spots in the 800 meters, with Brad Mouse finishing first, Mike Elizondo finishing second, and Jeff Elizondo picking up fourth place. Sequoyah swept the top three spots in the mile, as Mouse finished first, Mike Elizondo grabbed second, and Chester Nofire finished third. SHS was equally impressive in the two miles, as Mouse brought home the regional title, Nofire finished third, and Kasper Holmes picked up fourth place. Martin Wind was strong in both the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter high hurdles, finishing second and fourth, respectively, in the two events. The mile relay team of Reese, Jeff Elizondo, HorseChief and Johnson brought home second, while Reese, Jeff Elizondo, Mouse and Mike Elizondo finished first in the two-mile relay. Johnson finished third in the long jump, with Kyram Sam finishing fifth. Wind brought home second on the pole vault, with Walter Buffalomeat competing in the pole vault, as well. The Lady Indians were led by Rachel Chouteau, who finished first in both the mile and two miles. Amanda Little grabbed fourth in the 400 meters, while also finishing sixth in the long jump and third in the high jump. The mile relay team of Judy Powell, Helen Morgan, Vanessa Sunday and Ashley Thirsty finished fifth, while Powell, Morgan, Sunday and Little brought home third in the two-mile relay. Haley Larsen finished second in the disc, with Anna McLemore finishing fifth in the shot put. The Indians and Lady Indians will next compete in the Class 2A State Tournament, scheduled for May 9-10, at Tulsa East Central High School. |
