Madras Famine Victims 1876-1878

Famine wiped out several million people in the city of Madras and in other areas of West India in 1876-1878. The photograph here was used to highlight the plight of affected peoples and was used in raising funds for relief efforts among relatively wealthy Westerners.

Points to Ponder:

--. Do you think that famines were widespread events?
--. Were there any characteristics of Indian society that may have contributed to such suffering?
--. Do you think that Western technology or politics may have contributed to either the worsening of this famine or its alleviation?
