I NEED WORK

A young woman of Berlin appeals to her fellow citizens for work. Her sign reads: "Hello, I'm looking for work. I can do shorthand and typing, can speak French and English, will accept any kind of household job and can do anything that demands an attentive mind."

This woman's skills and her desperation indicate the severity of the economic crisis facing the German people in the 1930s.

It was people like her, frustrated and desperate, who willingly turned to those -- like Hitler and the Nazis -- who promised to end the crisis and reclaim Germany's perceived right to economic and political superiority in Europe.
