Hiroshima : 1948
Hiroshima had been devastated
by the Enola Gay's dropping of the first (and so far last) nuclear
weapon in August 1945. More than 90 percent of all the buildings
were destroyed and the task of rebuilding the city began with
the use of traditional equipment. The image shows the use of wooden
poles and ropes to frame out structures. The city was dedicated
to world peace and the new city included hospitals that gave free
treatment to Japanese victims of the bombing.
