In a Sleep

In a sleep
I push my hands into dark soil
Ignoring the dirt pressing under my fingernails
My skin splits apart
at finger ends
and bones tug like roots
Pulling me
elbows, breasts, knees
into the ground

Like a plant half unfurled
Surrounded by broken skin
Waiting to burst through the surface of the earth.
