PRINTING TERMS
Backs
up - Direction side 1 and side 2 match up.
Bleeds - When any part of the art or copy goes off
the edge of the finished piece.
Binding - The process in finishing job into a book
form.
Bindery work - Any finishing work that would be
done to piece after printed. I.e.: Trimming, Folding, Perfing, Scoring, Die
cutting, Binding.
Blueline - Proof made from negatives on to blue
light sensitive paper, Standard proofing process.
CMYK - Cyan, magenta, yellow and black standard
process colors to create color reproductions in any hue.
PMS - (Pantone Matching System) - Spot colors (single
colors) Pre-Mixed Ink. Printing specific ink colors to targeted areas.
Color Key - Color proofing system, (which is used
with CMYK), each color on separate sheet of mylar. To show color of finished
piece.
Matchprints - Color Proofing system, which laminates
each color together to show combined color. 90% color accurate. Can not match
PMS color on Matchprint although it can come close and show color breaks.
Color Break - Shows which parts of printed piece
will be what color. Can be done by separate lasers of a combined laser, marked
with highlighter to represent a PMS color.
Coverage (Light, Medium, Heavy) - amount of ink
to be printed on sheet, I.e.: Text only would be Light, Some Pictures with type
and some screens might be medium, many solids and pictures with type and screens
would be Heavy coverage, little to no paper showing.
Close Registration - This refers to where 2 or more
colors would touch or over print each other on the same printed piece.
Duotones - Halftones (Pictures) that are done with
two different screen angles and with two colors of ink. Commonly used colors
are Black with Blue or Brown.
Dummy (layout)- A miniature replica of printing
piece showing page placement, How it backs up, Where it folds, Cuts, Scores
or perfs.
Die Cut (Scoring and Perfing)- Die needs to be made
to specifications of printed piece, used to cut different shaped edges of the
printed piece.
Score - places an indent where piece can be folded
without cracking paper.
Perfing- Standard or Micro perfing available. Where
the sheet is perforated for easier tearing of a section.
Micro perf - is best for anything you would laser
print. It's a finer teeth pattern.
Embossing- A die is made to push up parts of the
sheet to be raised higher then the rest of the sheet.
Folding - How the finished piece will fold down.
Flat Size - Completed piece size before any folding,
or binding is done to it.
Finished Size - Size of Piece after folding or binding,
or size to be completed after trimming.
Foot - Refers to the bottom of the printed sheet.
Head - Refers to the top of the printed sheet.
Head to Head - Top of front sheet lines up with
the top of back sheet.
Head to Foot - Top of front sheet lines up with
the bottom of back sheet.
Halftone - The reproduction of a photograph, through
a contact screen, which converts image into dots of various sizes to create
tones in a printed black and white photo.
Knockouts - A place in a solid or screened area
where the color is cut out so it doesn't print.
Trapping- Adjoining colors by halftone dots to minimize
press miss-registration. This assures that the two colors touch, preventing
a white edge at the junction of both colors.
WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE READY FOR THE PRINTER
1)
A complete disk should contain; All fonts for piece, name of the program(s)
designed in, all graphics both linked (or) embedded in and graphic file on disk.
2) Laser prints of files with color breaks also
showing any recycled logo placement.
3) Dummy showing placement, folding, perfing, score
and /or die cutting.
