Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between Humboldt's study of language and his philosophical anthropology. Apparently, the study of language does not matter with the study of man. This opinion presupposes the mutual exclusion of the two fields and we cannot overcome the gap between them. However, the presupposition is not reasonable enough and we should never regard the opinion as an absolute truth. With the success of the development of scientific research, many fields are subjected to make use of scientific methods in order to develop an advance sophisticated theory. It is observed that the area of linguistics is limited to the science of language. For philosophical anthropology, which has a deep root in western civilization, is almost eliminated by the development of modern anthropology - a science emphasizes on field study and archeological data.
The origin of 'scientific turn' is related to the scientific revolution in 19th C. Newton and Galileo changed the world by interpreting the kosmos with scientific language. Their results were so successful and scholars from different fields started to apply scientific research methods to their studies. Auguste Comte (1798-1857), who suggested metaphysics to be replaced by science, made the first attempt. His positivism is applied to study social phenomena and it becomes sociology nowadays. Modern psychology developed in the same manner, which applied science to examine man. Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920) emphasized experimental approach in psychology. Even today, there is many psychologists regard psychology as a science in strict sense. In philosophy, John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) suggested to build up philosophical systems with scientific methodology.
It is best to analysis with a fine measurement when a precise reading is required, but we have to remind ourselves that science is not the only paradigm. There are other means of study; scientific method is not the only way to study things. In the field of linguistics, scientific study may by necessary in many aspects but we should never forget that there are other possibilities to study language. On the other hand, we should keep an eye on the other sciences, as it is blind to see the world from a linguistic point of view only. It is impossible to return to pre-scientific eras and we are not going to abandon all sciences. Other than science, there are other approaches to language and philosophical anthropology is one of the possibilities. We should consider the relationship between linguistics and the study of man in the history of thought. The Question "What is man?" is the most difficult question in philosophy. In western tradition, the answer of the above question is linked with the problematic of language. Aristotle distinguished man and brutes this way: man is political animal (politikon zoion), man is the only animal possessing the ability of speech (logon de monon anthropos echei ton zoion). Logos does not mean logic, but the ability to speak out and to know. For man in city-state, by the use of logos he can realize
Aristotle studied the language of man, but he did not simply regard logos as language alone. Logos is rich in teleological meaning. Man use logos to distinguish good and evil, and build up justice and community in order to bring happiness in his soul. Therefore, man is not a simply an animal that produces sound but someone who is concerned with his finality. This idea of logos had great impact on the thinkers in Europe. But after Descartes, the situation changed. Man is no longer concerned with logos; he is defined as animal rationale. This ratio means reason or the ability to declare our thoughts to others. Unlike other animals, which act according to their natural disposition, only man and man alone can act from his knowledge. He observed that magpies and parrots can utter words like human, yet they do not seem to understand what they say. A real man is not a machine, he has to co-operate his soul with his body.
As we have already seen, the problem of language is crucially linked with the question of the essence of man. It was once again demonstrated in the anthropological linguistics of Wilhelm von Humboldt, (1767-1835). Humboldt is one of the most important figures in modern linguistic, but Humboldt is ignored by most of us. We seldom study his theories because his texts. One may even ask, ' Who is Humboldt?' - Is he a philosopher or a politician, a pedagogue or a linguist? It is a difficult question to answer as Humboldt has multiple identities. In fact, he is not a linguist in Bopp's sense and not a philosopher in Hegel's sense. He is a philosopher-linguist. His concern is not on language only, what he concerned is to explain the different phenomenon of man, especially the phenomena of using language. In Humbodlt's sense, linguistics is not Sprachwissenschaft (science of language) but Sprachstudium (study of language). He studied different languages (Sprachen) but he aimed at study the language of man (die Sprach des Mensch). At the other hand, philosophical anthropology should not be limited as Wissenschaft des Mensch (science of man) but Studium des Mensch (study of man). It is not enough to study man from a scientific point of view. Philosophical anthropology can never be reduced by modern anthropology.
The problem of man and language can also be found in Chinese philosophy. From the Confucian point of view, a man with excellent language ability is not a real man. In general, the Chinese thinkers concerned with the morality rather than language ability of man.
