I have found that the store-bought nets aren't big enough for boy-sized collecting.  If you make your own net you can make it as big as you want.  And our motto around here is the bigger the better!  Especially when it comes to catching bugs that will creep our mom!

Materials:
Metal coat hanger
Toile fabric (veil, tutu or netting) - 3 foot square piece
Thread (I used embroidery thread - all four strands, so it's thick)

Putting it together:
1. Straighten the hook of the coat hanger.  This will be part of your handle.
2. Shape the rest of the hanger (the triangular part) into a circle about eight to ten inches in diameter.  You will have left over hanger.  Simply straighten (flatten) that out to be the rest of the handle of your net.  It should look like a big bubble-blowing wand.
3. Make a cone shape out of yout netting material.  Leave the end open.  This should be about eight to ten inches in diameter (enough to stretch around the wand opening).  You can make the cone shape by either cutting two triangles and stitching the long sides together or folding the netting and stitching up one side.
4. Stretch the open end of the cone netting around the rim of the wand and fold over.  Whip stitch tightly around the metal wire and the netting with thread.  The netting won't wrap perfectly at the wand handle, so just leave it open a little.
