Alternative Methods to Obtain Diplomas
There are four ways for home educated students to obtain high school diplomas and become eligible to receive PHEAA funding in Pennsylvania:
1. Graduate from a PDE approved diploma program.
2. Take and pass the GED.
3. Have your superintendent sign a form stating that the homes chool program was in compliance and the graduation requirements were met per home education law.
4. A high school diploma will be issued upon presentation of evidence of full matriculation and the satisfactory completion of a minimum of one full year or thirty semester hours of study at an accredited institution of postsecondary education (PA School Code Chapter 4, Section 4.72).

Dual enrolled students could fulfill the fourth requirement in their junior and senior years of high school, obtain a state issued diploma and therefore qualify for PHEAA funding.  Click here for PA School Code, Chapter 4, Section 4.72.

For additional information on PHEAA, please call PHEAA at 800.692.7392 and ask for Sally Yost.  Or go to the
PHEAA website (click here) and scroll down to "What is the the high school graduation requirement for State Grant Aid?"

For those who would like to speak to a real person about using college credits to earn a high school diploma, they can contact Mary Cain (GED Office) at 717.783.6871.
