Since 1992, I've owned Pit Bulls. Not my parents, not my siblings or boyfriends.
One of the first things people say is, "Oh, those are your boyfriend's dogs aren't they." Nope. I got into these dogs out of curiousity. I wanted to see if they were really as bad as everyone thought, or if they were really sweet dogs who have a bad rep. The latter was true. These dogs are amazing animals. They have so much history that people really don't care to explore, because they can't get past the first impression of them.
True, they are the target pet for people who want a dog for a status symbol, and they are intimidating enough to own as a watch dog, but by nature, these dogs are some of the most intelligent and sweetest you will ever own. Every Pit Bull owner I speak to says they will never own another breed.
If treated poorly, any breed can become vicious. Every breed of dog has bitten a human, but the majority of the time, none of them make the news, unless it's a Pit Bull. If they aired every dog bite on the news or in the papers, you'd be amazed at how many are NOT Pit Bulls! But enough about that...
My dogs have been raised around children and have been thouroughly socialized. I take them everywhere with me. They go to street faires, racetracks, firework shows, or anywhere else that has a lot of people and a lot going on. They are also very well trained and very well mannered. People walk up to pet my dogs and talk of how nice they are, and have no clue what kind of dog they are. As soon as I tell them, they step back for a minute, almost scared, then say, "Wow! I never knew Pit Bulls were so nice!" I have changed many minds about these dogs, and I am proud to know that I have made even a tiny dent in the misunderstanding.
