The surrounding lands are stunning and open with views of the mountains in the distance and a free roaming elk herd that can often be seen up close and almost personal. The hotel is fabulous, first from a distance and then up close with its bright white exterior overlooking the town of Estes Park from its impressive perch on the hill. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| In 1903, Freelan Oscar Stanley was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Upon the advice of his doctor, he was sent to Denver, Colorado but was not expected to live beyond six months. After a month in Denver and still not showing any signs of change, arrangements were made for him and his wife to stay at a friend's cabin in Estes Park. Between the short time of moving from Denver to Estes Park, his coughing subsided and he was markedly better. He and his wife fell in love with the area and decided to settle permanently in Estes Park. Shortly afterwards, they built a house then in 1907, construction of the hotel began. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| F.O. Stanley wanted all the modern luxuries and conveniences available in the hotel for his guests. His first order of business was running water and indoor toilets so he devised a water pipe system from the mountains that brought down this amenity. He also wanted to provide electricity for lighting so he built a hydroelectic plant in the mountains to provide this additional feature. One last notable luxury when the hotel opened was a telephone in each room to call down for room service. With each advancement in these luxuries, he also made sure that the village of Estes Park was provided with the same amenities. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| In 1909 the hotel was open for business. Since the hotel was primarily for summer business, it did not have central heat and the only heat available was from two fireplaces located in the lobby. Heat was added in 1979 making the hotel viable year round. | ||||||||||||||||||||
