| Demeter And... Ah, a greatly pondered question. Who is Demeter romatically involved with anyway? Below are generally excepted theories, and some of my own ideas. GE - Generally excepted MI - My ideas Alonzo GE In several productions of CATS, including Broadway, the U.S. Tours, and, I believe, German productions, Demeter and Alonzo are an item. Speaking from a personal experience, involving the U.S. Tour V, Alonzo tries, in vain, to flirt with Demeter in the first half of the show. After being rejected by Demeter, Alonzo and Demeter are distant with each other, with the exception of Macavity "scares". During these times Alonzo is hovering nearby Demeter, who remains unaware of her protector. In the second half of the musical, Alonzo does Demeter's solo dance for Macavity along with her, a seductive shadow moving silently in her wake. The effects really quite good. Then, during the fight between the Jellicles and Macavity, Alonzo takes the half fainted Demeter off to safety, and, after Munkustrap is injured about a minuet into his battle with Macavity, Alonzo takes over. Unlike the video production of CATS, Alonzo does a great deal more fighting then Munkustrap, and it is he Demeter goes and tends to his injuries after the fighting has stopped. You can see them cuddling during the song Magical Mr. Mistoffelees. Also, directly before Grizabella goes into her final song, Demeter moves to reach out to the queen one last time, but rejects her at the last moment, then runs to Alonzo, who shields and comforts her. The two are really quite adorable, and tied in second for my favorite Demeter couple. Electra MI Just another couple that I think would be too adorable. The two reflect each other, both solem and normally quiet. I just think it would be sweet. Macavity GE There is an infinite amount of speculation about the relationship between Demeter and Macavity. One thing is made clear throughout the musical, Demeter knows Macavity, personally, not just by name, and she greatly fears him. Her wariness of toms suggest that she was in someway hurt, physically, by one, and Macavity is the suspect. There are also other subtle hints which hint a past relationship between Demeter and Macavity, including her acute senses where he's concerned, her ability to sense Macavity before the rest of her tribe, including Mistoffelees, Coricopat, and Tantomile. Also, the way Demeter dances while she sings Macavity's song suggests that he was an amazing lover, or had some great hold over her body, but in her mind, she hated what he was doing to her and how it made her feel. My ultimate favorite couple. Mungojerrie MI I know there aren't any solid facts in the musical that would point to a relationship between Mungojerrie and Demeter, but I think these two would be too sweet together. Munkustrap GE Demeter and Munkustrap are widely excepted by CATS fans everywhere. To my knowledge, their paired in the video and London productions of CATS, perhaps more. These two are definitely the junkyard sweethearts in many peoples opinion. Personally, I think this couple is overused. Yes, its sweet, but it does get old. However, Munkustrap's relationship with Demeter, minus the light flirtation with her in the beginning of the musical, dancing behind her during the song Macavity, and comforting her after she rejects Grizabella (I'm getting this all from the video btw...I don't know if he acts the same way in London's live performance), reflects the one Alonzo and Demeter share. A very sweet couple, but, in my opinion, overused. Plato MI In the Troika Tour I'm positive there was something going on between Demeter and Plato during the beginning of the show. Demeter and Plato were together during the mating dance and he partnered her during Bombalurina's sexy solo dance during the Jellicle Ball. Also, he was the only tom Demeter would let near her during the entire first half of the performance, including Alonzo. So, yes, I think a relationship between them is plausible. Rum Tum Tugger MI This is purely speculation on my part, but I believe, and I'm probably wrong, so please don't hold me to this, that Demeter or Hamletra and Rum Tum Tugger or Rom Tom Tapper have some sort of relationship between them in the Oslo production. I've searched through as many pictures as I could find of the production and I have yet to see Bombalurina or Bomfallerina with Rom Tom Tapper. I have, however, found several pictures of Hamletra and Rom Tom Tapper. I think the two are an extremely cute couple, but as I said, I'm just speculating. Also, a recent trip report of a friend of mine stated that in the UK Tour Rum Tum Tugger choose Demeter as his partner in the mating dance. So...yes. |
