Random Thoughts

Off To Camp
Sunday, June 13, 2004, 10:53 AM

Having been certified a Boy Scout Chaplain after four intense days of training last week, I'm now heading out to do the real thing. Do I feel ready? Not really, but that makes me perfectly positioned to succeed because I'll be asking for help. In that spirit, your prayer is welcome.

I'm sorry to say that blog posts will be rather rare from here on out. But I will be back from time to time, perhaps with a good story or two.

Preparing To Be Prepared

This weekend I begin Boy Scout school to learn how to be a camp chaplain. This means I'll be in a tent and out of blog's reach for a few days.

Pop Culture
Saturday, June 5, 2004, 2:29 AM

Followers of this blog will know that, from time to time, Catholic Thoughts give way for Random Thoughts. This is one of those times.

What do you call those fizzy drinks that come in aluminum cans? Where you live may determine the answer. Someone has put the internet to good use and has provided us with data on the subject. It's Pop vs. Soda (and in some places "Coke").

Here are some of my own research findings in the field of geographically-linked lingo:

  • If you say, "Duck, duck, grey duck," you're from Minnesota. If you say, "Duck, duck, goose," you're normal.

  • If you always call it a "Water Fountain", you're not from Wisconsin. If you call it a "Bubbler", you're cool.

  • Thoughts On Prayer And Belief
    Thursday, June 3, 2004, 11:21 PM

Here are two quotes that I took note of recently:

"Prayer.--A soul arms itself by prayer for all kinds of combat. In whatever state the soul may be, it ought to pray. A soul which is pure and beautiful must pray, or else it will lose its beauty; a soul which is striving after this purity must pray, or else it will never attain it; a soul which is newly converted must pray, or else it will fall again; a sinful soul, plunged in sins, must pray so that it might rise again. There is no soul which is not bound to pray, for every single grace comes to the soul through prayer." (Saint Faustina)

"To believe in Him means to do His will." (Saint Irenaeus)
