Personal Religious
Identifications
Right Reverend Mike Nassau, Bishop of Bicol
Rational Catholic Church of the Philippines
The
following list gives religions or religious groups with which I identify and
the aspects or attributes which I find especially good for each of them.
Freethought:
Freethinkers believe in thinking for oneself, challenging
"authority". There are many Freethought churches (Universal Life
Church, Universal Ministries, Rational Catholic Church of the Philippines,
Spiritual Humanism, etc.) which do not use the term. See Links below,
many of these churches offer free ordination to all, since in Freethought,
everyone is or can be clergy.
Agnosticism or Rationalism
(Apathetic Agnostic Church): Nontheism, Rationality, Freedom of thought,
Philosophy, Sense of humor
Pantheism
(World Pantheist Movement): Theology (Nature or the Universe is God),
Environmentalism. (Oversoul): Oversoul, Mana or Universal Spirit
Humanism
(American Humanist Association): Societal concerns, Theology,
Philosophy, Personal freedom
Ethical
Culture Society (American Ethical Union): Freedom of thought,
Philosophy, Theology, Social concerns
Unitarianism
(Unitarian-Universalist Association): Freedom of thought, Philosophy, Theology,
Social concerns
Baha'i
Faith: World unity, Toleration, Democratic administration,
Equality of sexes, Responsibility, Love of others
Native
American [God Is Red by Vine Deloria]: Environmentalism,
Tradition, Patience, Love of others
Quakerism
(Religious Society of Friends): Love of others, Pacifism, Service,
Humility, Responsibility
Judaism
(Reform Judaism): Respect for learning, Tradition, Scholarship,
Responsibility, Love of others
Islam
(Muslim American Society) [Ministry of W. Deen Mohammed]: Morality,
Sobriety, Rehabilitation, Combating crime and addiction, Responsibility, Love
of others.
Christianity
(Mainline Protestant) [Black Baptist or Methodist]: Minority Rights,
Community Service, Love of others, Music; [United Methodist or United Church of
Christ ("Evangelical Church")]: Social concerns, Scholarship,
Tolerance; (Old Catholic) [Philippine Independent Church, Iglesia Filipina
Independiente]: Correcting errors and abuses of the Roman Catholic Church.
Wicca or Gaianism:
Love of others, Equality of sexes, Value of individuals, Acceptance of the
Different, Gentleness, Love of nature, Love of the earth (Gaia, Gaea),
Environmentalism
Sikhism:
Hospitality, Beautiful prayers
Buddhism or Brahmo
Samaj: Introspection, Meditation, Enlightenment
There
are other religions which have elements I admire, like Hasidic Judaism, Seventh
Day Adventists, Mithraism, and African Traditional Religions, but which
contribute little to my personal religious concepts. There are some religions
which I know well but which I find so lacking in positive attributes or so destructive
that I feel them to be a totally negative presence in society, such as Roman
Catholicism, Fundamentalist (or "Born Again") Christianity,
Fundamentalist or Islamicist Islam, Mormonism (including the Philippine
breakaway group, Iglesia ni Cristo), Unification Church, Hinduism, Krishna
Consciousness, and Scientology.
