The Reflections of the Great Population Change in East Thrace of 1922
You should heard about it... The population change for Greek population in Asia Minor & East Thrace to Turkish population in Greece, after what Greeks call "Asia Minor Catastrophe"... Most people thinks only the Greeks of Asia Minor lived such a thing but before 1922 there were at least 715,000 Greeks in East Thrace (including Constantinople). The last Greek families left East Thrace at the population exchange of 1924. They left here many cities, towns, villages, monasteries, houses, schools, vineyards, olive yards, wine houses and so on after they went to mainland Greece in 1922. Now, I do live in "Rhaidestos", an old Greek city near Constantinople, on the northern coasts of Propontis. Rhaidestos was founded by Greek colonists from the Aegean island of Samos in about 600 BC. After this date, Thrace is started to be colonised by Greeks. The native people, called "Thracians" were Hellenised. Thrace had been a Greek land since that time until 1922.
Here is a lists the names of cities/towns where Greeks were living once in East Thrace (with their Turkish names in paranthesis, these are not all of them, these are just the ones that I know their "Greekness" and their Greek names):
On the coasts of Propontis (between Konstantinopolis and Rhaidestos):
Konstantinopolis (Istanbul), Kallikratia (Mimarsinan), Selivria (Silivri), Heraklia or Irakleia (Marmara Ereglisi), Heraion Teikos (Yeniciftlik), Rhaidestos (Tekirdag)
On the coasts of Propontis (between Rhaidestos and Peristasis): Panados(Barbaros), Komba (Kumbag), Naim (Naip), Nikori (Yeniköy), Avdir or Vidimo(Ucmakdere), Ganos (Gaziköy), Melen (Güzelköy), Chora (Hosköy), Myriophyta (Mürefte), Heraklitsa (Eriklice), Kerasia (Kirazli), Peristasis (Sarköy).
On and around the Thracian Peninsula (Gallipoli Peninsula): Kavak (Kavakli), Aphrodisia (Evrese), Pliagri (Bolayir), Kallipolis (Gelibolu), Madytos (Eceabat), Krithia (Alcitepe).
North of Ieron Oros (Mt. Ganos):
Enerdzik (Dagyenice), Kestanboli (Ormanli)
On the coasts of Pontus (Black Sea):
Medea (Kiyiköy/Midye), Sidyrochori (Demirköy), Vizia (Vize), Anaktorion (Saray).
In the inner parts of East Thrace:
Adrianopolis (Edirne), Niki (Havsa), Makra Gefyra (Uzunköprü), Drongylion (Lalapasa) Arkadiopolis (Luleburgaz), Saranta Ekliesies (Kirklareli), Skopos (Usküp), Vryse (Pinarhisar), Artiskos (Babaeski), Chariopolis (Hayrabolu), Malgara (Malkara), Kesani (Kesan), Tyroloi (Corlu); also Metres or Metron (Catalca) near Constantinople; Ainos (Enez)on Aegean, Kypsala (Ipsala)near Ainos. Also the island of Imvros (Gökceada) and all of its villages can be counted within East Thrace Greek towns. and I also find Greek houses in Mermer, Isiklar, Simitli and Cinarli (that I don't know the Greek names).
I am trying to find someone who was born in these towns/cities or any other parts of East Thrace but gone to Greece in 1922, or someone who knows such a person (as a grandparent or as a neighbour etc...). You can always write me about my homepage or about catastrophe (especially in East Thrace) and about someone you know: borned in East Thrace, but forced to leave the region for immigrating to Greece after the catastrophe (population exchange).

Thank you for visiting. I also request you to visit my homepage about Asia Minor Greeks and towns. You can also find the Greek names of the towns in the southern coasts of Propontis. You can see a link for that in this page. You can e-mail me about anything you want, be free.

This page is always under construction, that means always new things are added. So please visit again...
PHOTOS OF THE GREEK HOUSES AND BUILDINGS OF RHAIDESTOS PART IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
In this photo, you can see a nice Greek house in Ganos, Gaziköy in Turkish, south-west of Rhaidestos. It is now used as the house of the mayor of the village.
