Who owned cat?

by Sam Pazzano, Courts Bureau, Toronto Sun, April 2, 2003

A former Toronto squeegee kid facing charges in the brutal torture and slaying of a tabby cat appeared briefly in court via closed circuit TV yesterday.

Matthew "Matt" Kaczorowski, 21, who will make another appearance today, was remanded into custody.

His new lawyer, Dan Brodsky, said he hopes to resolve the case soon after a judicial pre-trial meeting to be held next Tuesday.

"He's not charged with cruelty to animals (because it's past the time period for the charge), but theft, possession and mischief to property -- namely the cat -- and the Crown must prove ownership of it," said Brodsky.

"How do you steal something if no one owns it?" he said.

Last April, two other suspects pleaded guilty and were sentenced on charges of mischief and animal cruelty.
