Established in
February 1954. Named after Sir Douglas Mawson, it is the oldest,
continuously occupied station south of the Antarctic Circle. It
is also the furthest from continental Australia, 5,200km SSW of
Perth
The highest temperature recorded
at Mawson is +10deg C in Jan to -36deg C in August. Mawson experiences
high winds. Situated at the base of the ice plateau the katabatic
winds are a daily occurance.
Major scientific programs undertaken
in and around Mawson are upper atmosphere physics, cosmic ray physics,
geomagnetism, seismology, biology, glaciology, climate change studies,
glaciology, medicine,geology, geomorphology, geoscience, meteorology,
botany and mapping.
