Art Museum exhibits Joachim Casell's Pastels
By ARNIE POWELL

The Fort Walton Beach Art Museum Association is celebrating its eighth anniversary this month. Currently on display at the museum, which is located on Robinwood Drive are some unusual pastels by Joachim Casell.
Casell currently resides in New Orleans where he owns a gallery. Although he has been in this country for about 30 years. He was born on the French and Spanish Border and studied at the Ecole de Beau Arts. He met his future wife there, and she was studying music. They moved to this country and began opening galleries.
According to Museum Director Zolle Campbell, "Casell and his wife thought that the life of an artist and a music person was very sad. That's why they started moving toward opening galleries. "Apparently, this also led Casell away from painting. However, his wife died a few years ago, and he turned to pursue his other love."
His work is surrealistic and vibrant. The bold strokes and brilliant colors take one several steps beyond realistic impressions of the world, though a touch of realism is always there. The result is alive and full of passion -- and the artist's view of the world. Vibrant blues and violets are set in contrast with firey clouds; simple forest scenes are brought alive with brilliant strokes of light. The light values are startling, and while well beyond realism, they are compelling. Casell's work takes what might otherwise be plain and ordinary settings and turns them into beautiful studies in light and color.
