Think yourself conducting your "imaginary orchestra" with sounds, chords, arranjements and everything else you create into your mind and record them on a DVD or what else existes. Is it so far...?

Considering Midi Sequence  
Midi files don't have the same quality as "wave" do. But they are very common on the web because they are extremily compact. So, transfering archives between servers and clients becomes easier when using "midi" files. A midi file with 75Kb if converted to "wave" would be about 2Mb. Think about the hardness to work it!
For a long General Midi was a standard in Midi Sequence. Therefore, several manufacturers have already developed systems with better performances as XG-MidPlug by

Midi sequencer doesn't record any sound. Instead, it records instructions to be reproduced by your sound module, with the same parameters you gave them when recording. So, the quality of your sound card will flow directly into the quality of the music you will listen to. Detail: midi sequencer doesn't generate the sounds of voices.
When recording a music to a tape the most you can change it is cutting/pasting/ deleting. However, a midi sequencer allow you to change any thing you want after recording. You can change the piano solo to sax, guitar or any other instrument; change the beat; convert horns to string section. You can add and modify dinamics as you wish.
