Studying Buddy's Moves...

I was watching the Buddy Rich video again this morning and specifically studying the solos he had done with the Harry James Orchestra.

Having watched this video so many times,  you'd think I would've gotten tired of it by now.   But for me,  I never get tired watching Buddy perform.   He's such a joy to watch.   The song was an arrangement of "Cherokee" done in a very fast tempo.   Buddy took two solos during the piece.   On the second solo he "let the crowd have it".   I mean he really threw in everything,  "including the kitchen sink!"   And those solos are long extended solos and he shows no sign of getting tired at all,  especially with the speed and intensity in his performances!

This morning,  even though I've watched this video countless times, tears began to flow...   I just can't believe the things he's doing on the drum set,  but he's doing it!   It just makes a drummer feel good to be a drummer,  knowing that someone can achieve that level of technical mastery on the instrument,  even if one can't reach the level HE had reached.   It's very inspiring...

I worked mostly on my single stroke rolls today.   My double stroke rolls are "happening" right now for me,  but my single stroke rolls need work...    I need them to be cleaner, crisper...    like Buddy's!

I spoke to a woman yesterday who is a jazz vocalist around town.   She says she wants to begin hiring me starting in July.   I was overjoyed...    a gig,  but in July?   That's a little ways away...   but at least something's coming up on the calendar!

Anyway,  she's been a jazz vocalist around here for more than 20 years.   I'm sure she was just being nice,  trying to make me feel better,  but she was saying how I was the best "damn" musician in my previous band,  and that she was glad I was out of that band for my own benefit.   She thought I was stagnating musically and artistically up there with that band.   Well,  I was flattered...

Well,  this jazz vocalist has been a force on the jazz community here for quite a while,  plus she is one of the DJs at the local Jazz station here.

I believe that I would benefit because of the fact that she hire's the best jazz players in the Los Angeles area,  even for gigs around here in San Diego.   Okay,  that's a great thing for me,  for I feel that in order for me to grow musically,  I need to always perform with musicians better than myself.
