THURSDAY May 27, 1999 The Road To Recovery? I'm feeling kind of strange today, as if I'm in some sort of "limbo" and time is very still. After dropping my wife off at her work, I went home and then went for a morning walk... it felt very good, and I had been doing these morning walks in the past three days but thought nothing of them. But I feel they are a necessary part of getting back on the "road to recovery". So these walks are helpful and I'm getting out into the sun and fresh air. After the walk I got on the computer to check email and work on this journal site. I looked out the window and just enjoyed
the beautiful day. A neighbor's wind chimes were "playing"
in the distance as I opened the window to let the fresh air in.
I just sat and looked out the window in a content manner, appreciating
the beauty of the day. It WAS a gorgeous day today.
Practice As The Key To Survival I've been practicing extensively,
being that I have the time to do it. "Woodshedding" would
be the accurate term for a musician. With my practice routine
I've been focusing on improving my double bass drum technique, something
which I had been wanting to do for a long time. And now I'm
taking advantage of the extra time. The trick in working
out the double bass drumming is to fuse it seamlessly with the hands.
A difficult thing to accomplish but in the long run a very nice thing to
be able to work into a drum solo.
Barbecue Chicken Wings After picking up my wife from work,
we went home and I put some chicken wings on the grill that had been marinating
all day in a nice marinade of soy sauce, garlic, lemon and
lime juice. Barbecuing is another activity that relaxes
me.
My Older Son's Band Performance My older son's band recital was tonight at 7:30PM. He is studying trombone and is in Beginning Band class at his elementary school. The whole thing was reminiscent of the time I was learning and studying in beginning band. The poor band teacher... he had a tough time trying to get all the bands organized. There was Advanced Band, Woodwind Ensemble, String Ensemble, and the Beginning Band. The kids were all noisy prior to walking to the back stage, and they had to be sent all the way down at the end of the hall for fear they might disrupt the current performances. The show was late getting started and it's hard to keep that many kids quiet for very long. Anyway, my son and his Beginning Band did a great job on stage. I was proud of him, being the only trombone player in the bunch, amidst a sea of saxophones, clarinets and flutes. He was the only one carrying the "bottom end" of the overall sound. There were no tubas at all. When we got home, my younger son got on my drum pads and practiced for quite awhile, apparently inspired by all the performances tonight. And I practiced again too, after
he was finished, showing my younger son how to practice single and
double stroke rolls.
