Concert At San Diego State
I woke up around 8am this morning.
I wanted to help out with getting the kids ready for school.
Although I was still tired from last night's show at Schooner's,
I was up and about. I was ready to take our youngest son to
school, but the little guy insisted on having his mom take him
( I guess it's a 'mommy' thing ). It reminded me of yesterday
when he said that he loves his mommy, and he 'likes' his daddy.
I was thinking that I should be hurt by this. But he explained
to me that guys like guys, and guys love girls. I guess
I could understand his logic.
Finished moving the rest of my journal
from Geocities to Xoom. Geocities has just gotten too ridiculous
without these floating watermarks and pop-up windows that seem to always
get in the way. I'll still keep the old journal at Geocities
just in case.
Got to San Diego State at around 10:50am.
It was hot and the stage had a canopy, but with the angle of the
sun, the stage was still hot and only the very back of the stage
was shaded.
We started at 12 noon. During
the first tune, I immediately was bathed in sweat, and I had
a hard time with the sweat getting into my eyes and stinging them.
It's hard when you're already performing and this happens with an awful
lot of people watching you. Lucky I had my shades on.
The sun was unforgiving, and we were wearing our suits in the middle
of this hot, sunny day.
All in all, the concert was a success.
Our usual following was there in front of the stage dancing away...
Jessica, Celine, and the rest of the San Diego State dancers,
members of the SDSU Dance Club.
Warren, Shannon and I hung out at
Monty's Den for lunch. Celine and a couple of her college friends
were there. Afterwards, Warren and I loaded my drumset
into the BTO van. I went home to rest a bit before our trip
later on in the day to Palm Springs for our gig at the Blue Tattoo.
On To Palm Springs
Nate, Shannon and I hung out a bit
at Nate's place, waiting for the BTO van to come with the rest of
the guys. The subject was 'dogs' and how they sometimes understand
words like say, 'go for a walk'. Shannon has a golden
retriever named Archie, and he sometimes understands certain key
words, but it may just be a reflex reaction to other cues such as
body language, etc.
When we all were finally loaded into the
van and on our way to Palm Springs, I ended up getting a bit of a
nap.
When we arrived at the Blue Tattoo,
we found out the Tom, our bassist, had gotten into a minor
traffic accident. The front of his truck was pretty much smashed.
I felt bad for him.
When we started our first set, the
sound engineer had us 'thumpin' and everything was exceptionally loud.
We tried to get him to bring the stage volume down, but he seemed
to not be very cooperative. As a matter of fact, we noticed
that this guy was totally somewhere else mentally. We were
sure whether he just wanted to be someplace else, or that he was
just doing his just and that all this swing stuff just wasn't his cup of
tea! Anyway, I get a kick out of some of this sound guys
that we meet at the various venues. Some guys are really frustrated
musicians who couldn't make it as musicians, and so they have to
work as sound engineers. But I have to admit that from my experience,
a lot of these guys have a big chip on their shoulder, and it's probably
because they ARE frustrated musicians.
Anyway, we did three sets,
and during that final set my arms felt like jello, I mean,
I was very weak and tired. I really played my ass off at the
San Diego State concert and now it was catching up with me.
On the way home I fell asleep and didn't
come to until we were almost at Nate's house. I was tired but
not falling asleep at at the wheel on the way to my house. I arrived
at my house around 4:00am, and with the knowledge that we were going
to perform at Croce's Top Hat again later on tonight!!
