Tonight's Gig:   The Derby ~ Hollywood,  CA.

Got Up Early --- Again!

I didn't get to bed until 5:30am this morning after coming home from the Palm Springs gig!   Our 3 hour trek home included running into an hour's worth of traffic,  and having to try and keep Nate awake while trying to stay awake myself as well.

Well,  wouldn't you know it,  I had to wake up at 7:30am,  to get the kids ready for school.   My wife couldn't do it because of an early conference she had to attend at work,  some sort of training conference for managers.

Anyway,  much of the time spent between 7:30am and 9:30am was for getting breakfast on the table,  helping the boys get dressed and ready for school,  and sending them off on their "merry" way.

Tried To Work On The Website

I checked email and worked on updating the journal when I got back from taking my 6 year old to his elementary school.   By 10:00am,  I "crashed" and didn't wake up until around 12:30pm,  when I realized that I didn't have much day left to do anything else except get ready for the next gig tonight at The Derby.

Nate and I were carpooling again as usual.   I was going to drive this time,  and I was worried again about the traffic on the way to Nate's house.

As usual,  I made arrangements for my father-in-law to pick up my youngest son,  and wait for my oldest son to come home via school bus.

I left the house about 3:20pm and arrived at Nate's house close to 4:00pm.   We left a little after 4pm,  heading for Hollywood,  and The Derby.

More Of The Same L.A. Traffic!

Why people live in L.A. is beyond me!   I know L.A. has a reputation for its horrific traffic problems,  but I guess people there are so used to the traffic that they either don't mind,  or they are just resigned to the fact that it's a part of their way of life.

Anyway,  the traffic on the way up to The Derby was again heavy and very congested at times,  but it WAS tolerable.   I was just glad it wasn't like the Palm Springs commute!

We ended up getting to The Derby around 6:30pm and by 7:30pm was set up on stage.   This was extremely early for both Nate and I,  but we were glad not to be late.   We were the first ones there as far as bandmembers go,  and I guess in a way I was proud of the fact.   Dick and Terry,  who seem to always be the first ones to arrive,  weren't even here yet.   What a pleasant surprise.

The Derby - Hollywood, CA.

The Barflies List is the official e-mailing list for the Gangsters of Bop,  Royal Crown Revue.   With 280-plus members strong,  the list can have as many as 200 e-mail posts a day...   a very active list,  to say the least,  but a very interesting one nonetheless.   The topic is SWING,  and swing dancers,  professional musicians,  radio personalities,  and supporters of the new-swing movement  (what I call The Second Swing Era) actively post,  promote and discuss the subject of Swing!   Many times the list gets off topic,  but the main topics are usually swing related.

Anyway,  there had been some talk about a "barflies" get together at The Derby.   Southern California barflies had picked tonight,  a Big Time Operator gig as a place to meet,  and I was excited about meeting some of these people.

Well,  just as I'd pictured it in my mind,  I was fortunate enough to meet several barflies prior to the show.   All of whom were good-natured and excited to be here.   It was a good thing I was set up and ready to go,  otherwise I would have been pressed for time with all the socializing going on,  and I indeed had a blast getting to know everyone.

I was able to get a bite to eat  before we started...   Nate and I sat in one of The Derby's booths.   Nate had a gourmet pizza and I had crab cakes and salad.

Well I don't want to bog

I Suppose I Did Good

It's funny,  there's a few people that,  if they found out I doubted myself,  they'd "kill" me.   It's very easy for me to doubt myself...   I've had this inferiority complex for so long.   Now  a lot of the barflies on gave me the greatest compliments online,
