Article
Santa Cruzan is a cultural event
that Filipinos celebrate
during the month of May.
This event culminates in a series
of beauty pageants, floral and religious processions.

The story of the
existence of
Santa Cruzan comes in many different versions. One version depicts the discovery
of the Holy Cross (Santa Cruz) by Maria Elena and her son, Prince Constantine.
Maria Elena was a
queen, and
a widow who was experiencing hardships in life. She was believed
to be a Muslim by birth, but she converted to Christianity and
vowed to look for the Holy Cross where Jesus Christ died. It was also believed
that Queen Maria Elena (Reyna Elena) found the Holy Cross which she believed
helped her
get through her hardships. Since then, she vowed to pay tribute
to the Holy Cross with offerings
of love to God by virtue of respect
to the Virgin Mother.

Reyna Elena represents Queen
Helena, who is believed to
have found the cross on which
Jesus was crucified. Of all the
Reynas representing various elements of the Philippines'
Catholic faith and culture,
she has the most ornate
costume and is given the honor
as the procession's "finale".
