What scares you the most? WORDSWORTH
By Mons Romulo-Tantoco
No one can claim being beyond fear or never having felt
scared of anything,
whether it’s fear for one’s safety or somebody else’s. It doesn’t make us
cowards
– as long as we don’t let it control our lives. Fear, in fact, can make us more
aware
of the dangers lurking all around.
We all have stories to share about the moments that really scared us
and most of the time these are beyond our control: they could be accidents that
we missed but by the grace of God, or really big rodents, or perhaps even
fear of the unknown.
As for me, what keeps me strong and helps me face my fears is my faith in God.
There are so many things we are powerless to control and only He can direct for
us.

Carla Humphries, model and actress: Disappointment is what I fear the most.
When I disappoint myself or people who matter to me, I actually get an anxiety
attack.
DJ Sta. Ana, director, news and gathering
department, ABS-CBN News:
The fear of something bad happening to my wife Karen and my son David Joshua
when I’m not there. The fear of not being able to provide for them. The fear
that you have not done your best or not anticipated every possibility. But you
realize there is only so much you can do and just have to pray to God for the
best.
Ricardo S. Soler, permanent student, part-time businessman:
Nothing really scares me anymore except being scared. I am scared of being
afraid and vice-versa. It may be because of age but even while still young I
realized that fear is no more than not knowing. We fear only what we do not
know; we cannot be afraid of what we are aware of. Fear is of our own making, a
shielding reaction to the unknown. If we examine the cause of our fear coldly,
we’ll discover it to be the gratuitous expectation of a menace that will hurt us
and be the occasion of grief, sorrow, anguish or physical pain. We react to fear
by fighting or fleeing, more often the latter because it is not easy to fight
the unknown. But if we analyze the hazard we are anticipating, we will find it
to be deceptive and illusory. We can conquer fear.
Ciara Marasigan, accessories designer: Call me odd but I’m scared of the
sight of chicken head, intestines and feet skewered on barbecue sticks. I’ve had
bloody nightmares over them ever since I was a little girl. Fowl is definitely
foul with me.
Ino T.Caluza Jr., jeans designer: The idea of having a debilitating disease
or being involved in a freak accident that would leave me physically handicapped
for the rest of my life, because I really get anxious at the thought of not
being able to work creatively anymore and not living life to the fullest.
Cogie Domingo, actor:
What scares me the most is the thought of death or
dying alone….leaving my loved ones behind. It’s the only thing that I really
fear
and I hope will not happen.
Petite Brodette-Olbes, division manager, Rustan’s Commercial Corporation:
Lizards and frogs scare the daylights out of me because I had a close encounter
with them as a child and whenever I see them in those nature shows on cable, I
change the channel!
Renato Enriquez, businessman: What scares me is that if I will be
unsuccessful in what I want to achieve and I do not succeed.
Corey Wills, model, sportsman and animal lover: My greatest fear is seeing
my loved ones being harmed and being powerless to stop it. Witnessing innocent
people suffering just seems to bother me the most and seeing the ones I adore
suffering would be unbearable. Oh, and jumpy insects are pretty terrifying, too!
Argee Guevarra, lawyer: I’m scared to wake up one day, stare at the man on
the mirror and see a balding, Jurassic, jaded geezer who has lost his mojos in
the fight against the demons that bedevil the nation. That, and my friends
noticing horns starting to grow on my forehead.
