International Eco-Conference

Public Participation: The Road from Words to Practice!”

The Public Participation Campaigns Committee of European EcoForum is organising a conference on the implementation and further development of the Aarhus Convention immediately before the 1st Meeting of the Parties of the Aarhus Convention.

The Eco-Conference will take place in Lucca, Italy 19-20 October 2002. We expect about 40 representatives of Environmental Citizens’ Organisations (ECOs) from all the UNECE area to attend the Eco-Conference and to stay for the ministerial segment of the 1st Meeting of the Parties, 21 October 2002.

The aim of the ECO-Conference is to prepare EcoForum input into the 1st Meeting of the Parties. This would include:

Ø      to assess the overview of implementation of the Aarhus Convention;

Ø      to prepare NGO work on future developments of the Aarhus Convention: strategic environmental assessment and pollutant release and transfer registers protocols; genetically modified organisms legally-binding option; and other Aarhus related issues such as access to justice, reporting mechanisms, and compliance mechanism;

Ø      to assess achievements regarding EcoForum globalisation agenda; and to organise EcoForum work on promotion of effective implementation at national and EU levels.
