Instructor

Diane's Resume

Mrs. Diane Hendrickson is excited about preparing to teach Computer Skills to the WAHA students.  Diane believes in being a lifelong learner and is learning how much fun it is to explore features on  her new laptop computer and going wireless.  She has been busy updating the Career Connections website she created several years ago while teaching ninth grade students at Beechcroft High School.  Diane would like her students to learn computer skills they can use for personal use, high school, college and their future career.  While a teacher for Columbus Public Schools, she believed in developing partnerships with area businesses and the parents.

If there were two words which describe your instructor, they would be enthusiastic and busy.  Diane Hendrickson is enthusiastic about whatever she pursues--her love of life, her church activities, her varied interests, computers and teaching.  She lives up to the saying, "If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it!"

Diane was born in Columbus, grew up in Worthington and earned both her Bachelor's and Masters Plus degrees  from OSU.  Go Buckeyes!  As a baby, she had the measles and chicken pox at the same time and developed a high fever.  The fever was brought down too fast and caused nerve damage to her ears.  Since she has a mild hearing loss, she was able to go through pubic schools, college and even begin her teaching career without any special assistance. In the 1980's she became one of the charter members of the COHEAR Chapter of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (now called Hearing Loss Association of America).   Diane now wears two computerized assistive listening devices (hearing aids) and is a proficient lip reader.  She appreciates students working quietly in class and one person talking at once so she can hear when someone needs assistance.  Please see this links listed below  for further information on communicating with the hard of hearing:

While in 10th grade Diane took her first typing  course, and she began her business career by working in her Dad's landscape nursery office.  That teacher and her office supervisor influenced her decision  to take business courses in high school and then major in Vocational Business Education at OSU.  Through the years the enjoyment of keyboarding has evolved to be so much more on computers. Diane keeps on learning a variety of programs over the years:  WordStar, AppleWorks, WordPerfect, and then various versions of Word.   So this  instructor is a business education teacher first rather than being a "computer techie."

Her husband Paul and Diane are happily married and reside in the north end of  Columbus.  Paul is a retired new car salesman for Bob Daniels Buick.  The Hendrickson's are active members and worship at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church at Mill Run where they serve as greeters.   Diane coordinates the lectors for the contemporary worship services at Mill Run, regularly attends the 3D Bible Study (Diet, Discipline and Discipleship),  the Women of the Word (WOW) Bible Studies and has been a regular volunteer for Vacation Bible School.  On September 7 she began Beth Moore's newest study on Daniel:  Lives of Integrity Words of Prophecy

Together Diane and her husband share a love of  Gold Wing motorcycling, are active members of the Tri B Wings chapter of Gold Wing Road Riders Association and have traveled across the country.  They are the Membership Enhancement Coordinators for their chapter where Diane uses her Excel skills.  Their daughter Deanna and her family reside in Arlington, and they have two beautiful granddaughters Kaeris, almost 7 years old and Kaedance almost 2 years old.  They own two pets--a dog named Sassy and a caique parrot named Paulie.  Paul and Diane have volunteered with International Friendships for a number of years by becoming the "American family" of  international OSU grad students through Airport Pickup and providing temporary housing.   They love watching the latest movies on DVD and playing games such as Rummikub.

Diane's other interests and activities include daily morning walks with Sassy, attending Total Body Conditioning classes at Lifestyle Fitness,  working on her computer, and a regular blood donor for the American Red Cross.  She created and updates the website (using Frontpage and Word) for the retired Columbus Public Schools teachers (CEA-R) and has typed their activities brochure (again Word skills).  She attends both the CEA-R and Franklin County Retired Teachers luncheons and is a member of the Gillie Fillie Red Hatters with her 83-year old mother.  She enjoys taking digital photos, creating online photo albums,  photo slide shows and presentations for her clubs using PowerPoint.  Diane also likes to read Christian novels and inspirational books.

Mrs. Hendrickson thought she had retired from teaching after 32 years in education in June 2005.  Diane has worked in several positions since retirement.  She taught basic computer skills and various Microsoft Office classes at senior citizen centers for Web Wise Seniors.  Diane has worked as a precinct election official and during the spring was selected to be one of the trainers for the new computerized voting machines  for the Franklin County  Board of Elections

Her newest volunteer activities include becoming an "Encourager"--providing the teaching staff at Highland Elementary with monthly encouragement through surprise "survival bags," inspirational quotes and small gifts.  Diane just applied for the opportunity to become an 'e-mentor' for a young adult who lives in the Hilltop area (16-21 yrs. old) who is taking part in a job skills training program being put on by Central Ohio Youth for Christ and The Ohio State University.  UALC is the Regional Collection Center for Operation Christmas Child and Diane serves as the UALC Church Relations Coordinator for this ministry.  This year she will be able to use her new laptop and Excel to assist with registration of the shoeboxes.

She encourages the parents to sit in the Computer Skills classes or enroll themselves in a Web Wise Boomers course.  Students and parents are also encouraged to contact her via email between classes for assistance with Microsoft Office.
