Are you bothered by perfume?

Does the smallest whiff of air fresheners, detergents, cleaners or various fumes cause headaches, nausea and inability to concentrate?

You may be a Canary!

Chemically sensitive individuals refer to themselves as 'Canaries' after the canaries used as a warning system in mines. If the canary fell off it's perch, the air was contaminated and the miners ran out quickly. When we fall over, nobody pays any attention.

15% of Americans are affected by common chemicals generally considered safe for household and industrial use. About 4% of the general population are totally disabled. Considering the population is just over 325 million people, that means that 48,750,000 are affected and over 13 million are disabled.

Despite the huge numbers of affected people, there are no government or private agencies acting on our behalf to secure our rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Captain Canary is here to help!

Medical help:

The Center for Chemical Sensitivity will work to produce and present Continuing Medical Education classes and materials to educate physicians on the needs of chemically sensitive patients.

We will work to ensure that doctors, hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities provide an uncontaminated treatment environment so that we will not be injured further when we seek medical aid.

Housing:

The Center for Chemical Sensitivity will assist in locating suitable housing options on a case by case basis as well as work to create opportunities for chemical free housing development. We are currently exploring this exciting opportunity! http://www.i-domehouse.com/housing.html

Employment:

The Center for Chemical Sensitivity will assist in provide employment opportunities by hiring directly from the chemically sensitive community for all open positions within the organization and utilizing work from home labor whenever possible. We will also provide a listing service where chemically sensitive individuals can post their qualifications and employers can post offsite/remote/work from home positions, or list the accommodations they are willing to provide.

EMF Sensitivity:

While the Center for Chemical Sensitivity will be predominantly addressing the needs of those who are affected by chemicals, we will provide as much help and support to EMF sensitives as possible because the challenges faced by both communities are not only interrelated, they have similar practical solutions of avoidance and support needs. Approximately 80% of individuals affected by electromagnetic hypersensitivity are also chemically hypersensitive. The link between chemical and EMF sensitivity is just emerging and needs to be examined in greater detail.
