Betraying the Dragon

A hand in his hair woke the seventeen year old from the light sleep that was all he could afford now. His hands quickly sought and found the owner of the hand, and looking up, he smiled when he saw that it was only Kena. Relaxing slightly, he ran his fingers through his sleep tousled hair before sitting up. "What news is there?" he asked, somewhat impatiently.

"He's back, Scott." Scott jumped, and all of a sudden the look in her eyes reminded him of when they had just met...

Students wearing the green badges of interns paced quickly through the halls, Scott Morae among them. A klaxon alarm sounded, and swearing, he dashed around a corner and into a closet as twenty security guards came running towards him.

He backed up hesitantly as he heard the quiet click of a gun cocking in the closet next to him.

Who are you? the girl whispered, prodding him with her derringer. He hesitated briefly before answering, "Scott. Scott Morae. "

She looked at him appraisingly and whispered, "You know it would be easier for me to trust you if you gave me your real name. Mines Kena. Why dont you tell me yours, Scott? "

"I cant use my real name safely here, if you must know. I used to work here. I dont want anyone to know who I am. He was beginning to get irritated. This girl asked too many questions. Before she could blink, his colt .45 had taken the place of her derringer, and she raised an eyebrow in interest.

Well, youre fast, Ill give you that. He heard a click, and flinched as he realized what the noise had been. She grinned, and shook a finger at him. "But I'm faster. A small revolver was cocked and in her hand, pointing right into his stomach.

He grinned at her spunk, and using his speed to his advantage, dodged under her gun and pressed his lips briefly to hers before slipping out the door.

"Wait!" she called, and he slowed, allowing her to catch up. "When will I see you again? " she whispered, still breathless from their brief kiss. He heard feet pounding along the hall, and hurriedly slid a piece of paper into her hand before disappearing around the corner. With a sigh, Kena looked at the paper.

That had been last year. They had quickly become close, and within a week, they were lovers. But now, she had found out something about James. The man had been his best friend. He only wished it could have stayed that way.
