WESTLAND WESSEX

En 1956, Westland, adquirió la licencia del Sikorsky S-58. Le adaptó la turbina Napier Gazelle NGa. 11 de 1100 SHP en reemplazo del motor original que era un Wright R-1820-84 radial de 1525 HP. La aparente pérdida de potencia redundó en una reducción de la vibración y peso y en un mantenimiento mas fácil y en consumo de combustible menor.

La Royal Navy ordenó inmediatamente el helicóptero y lo renombró como Wessex HAS Mk.1 para reemplazar al viejo Whirlwind HAS Mk.7. La aeronave era básicamente similar al S-58 pero la trompa fue alterada para instalarle la nueva turbina, que al comienzo era la Gazelle NGa.13 de 1450 shp. Mas tarde el Wessex (MK.2 y 5) fueron potenciados con dos Rolls-Royce Gnome y empleados para el transporte de tropa. Westland construyo 356 Wessex entre todas las versiones.

In 1956, Westland, acquired the license for the more modern S-58. The powerplant of the latter was considered unsatisfactory and the British firm began a partial redesigning of the American aircraft to enable a 1100shp Napier Gazelle NGa. 11 turbine to be installed instead of the original 1525hp Wright R-1820-84 radial. The slight loss of power was offset by greater reliability, a reduction in vibration and weight, easier maintenance and a lowering of specific fuel consumption.

The Royal Navy immediately ordered the new helicopter as the Wessex HAS Mk.1, to replace the older Whirlwind HAS Mk.7. The aircraft was basically similar to the Sikorsky S-58, but the nose profile was altered as a result of the installation of the turbine which, in the first production version, was a 1450shp Gazelle NGa.13. Later Wessex (Mk.2 and 5) were powered by twin engines and employed as troop transports. Westland built 356 Wessex in all (including those for the civil market).

HAS.MK 1: Versión antisubmarina con motor Napier Gazelle MK 161.

HC.MK 2: Desarrollo de altas prestaciones del Wessex MK 1 equipado con 2 motores Bristol acoplados y estabilizados a una potencia unitaria de 1350 hp.

HAS.MK 3: Versión con motores Napier Gazelle MK 165 de 1600 hp y sistema automático de vuelo.

HC.MK 4: Versión con interiores VIP y utilizados por la patrulla de la Reina Británica, similares al HC MK 2.

HAS.MK 31: Versión para la marina australiana con motores Napier Gazelle MK 162 de 1575 hp, estabilizados a 1540 HP.

MK-60: Versión civil con capacidad para 10 ó 16 pasajeros.
