FOCKE-ACHGELIS FA-330 BACHSTELZE

Diseño original para que sea remolcado por un submarino y así obtener un radio de patrullaje hasta 5 veces mayor, el Fa 330 Bachstelze (lavandera) fue el desarrollo de Focke bajo el requerimiento de la marina alemana. Constaba de un rotor tripala sin motor y lugar para solo una persona. El lanzamiento del Fa 330 tenia lugar con el submarino navegando en superficie y los primeros giros del rotor se obtenían a mano, constaba de un teléfono para comunicación con el submarino del que estaba separado por unos 120 metros. Encontró resistencia en los comandantes de los submarinos debido a que eran un problema si debían sumergirse rápidamente y se lo utilizó en contadas ocasiones. No fueron construidos por Focke-Achgelis sino por WeserFlugzeugbau, que produjo unos 200 ejemplares.

The Fa-330 Rotary Wing Kite, built in Germany during WW II, operated on the principle of the autogyro. The aircraft was designed to provide an elevated observation platform for one man while being towed behind a surfaced submarine. It was attached to the submarine by a steel cable working from a winch on the deck. While aloft, the pilot was in contact with the submarine by telephone. In normal return to the sub, the winch wound in the cable until the Fa-330 was on the deck. There was an emergency procedure, however, by which the pilot could jettison the blades and rotor hub. When the rotor assembly separated, it automatically opened a parachute attached to both the machine and the pilot. The pilot then released his safety belt and the aircraft dropped into the sea, leaving the pilot descending alone by parachute.
