CHINOOK

The Boeing CH-47SD Chinook is the latest and most advanced model of the world's most efficient heavylift helicopter. The Chinook is a twin-turbine, tandem-rotor transport rotorcraft. Boeing in Philadelphia manufactures the Chinook for military customers around the world. More than 600 are currently in service in nearly 20 nations.

The CH-47SD, the latest version of the Chinook, features several new or improved components and systems that enhance capabilities while reducing operating and support costs. Among these standard features are a fully integrated digital cockpit management system - the "glass cockpit;" more powerful and economical engines with full authority digital engine control (FADEC); long-range fuel tanks, and an improved manufacturing process incorporating cost-saving machined structures and fuselage "tuning" that reduces the impact of vibration on the airframe and systems during flight. Other systems may be added to meet customer requirements.

Because the CH-47SD utilizes tandem-rotor configuration that translates full power to lift, the new Chinook can carry loads nearly three percent heavier than its own empty weight, making it the world's most efficient heavy-lift helicopter. Continuous product improvements have more than doubled the Chinook's lift capacity since its inception. The CH-47SD's high speed and large payload make it as effective as three utility helicopters and give the Chinook the lowest cost-per-ton-mile of any heavy-lift helicopter.

The Chinook has served as the prime mover for the U.S. Army and other military forces for decades. Its principal missions include transport of troops, artillery, ammunitions, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield. Other missions include medical evacuation, aircraft recovery, fire fighting, parachute drops, heavy construction, civil development, disaster relief, and search and rescue. In the U.S. Army National Guard and among international customers, Chinooks often expend the majority of their flight hours on these latter missions.
