HUGHES 500 D - MCDONNELL 500D

La serie posterior al Hughes 500 C, fue la denominada 500 D (500 MD para los militares) y se distingue de los modelos anteriores por contra con un estabilizador de cola en forma de “T” y rotor principal con 5 palas en lugar de las 4 anteriores. El motor también es diferente, equipándolo ahora un Allison 250 C20B de 420 SHP y 350SHP máximo continuo. El aumento de la potencia con la adopción de la nueva cola le da al conjunto una mejora general bastante notoria.

Desde su primer vuelo en 1974, Hughes (ahora MD) ha entregado unos 1000 aparatos; ha sido suministrado a diversos países y Fuerzas Armadas y es construido bajo licencia por Breda Nardi como NH-500D y por Kawasaki y Korean Air Lines

A later version, the 500D (500MD military) is distinguished externally from earlier models by a T-tail and five-blade rotor. The powerplant is also different — an Allison 250-C20B delivering an absolute maximum of 420 shp and 350shp maximum continuous power. The increase in power and adoption of the new tail unit have led to a general improvement in structural robustness, particularly of the landing gear, the lower part of the cabin and tail boom, plus, of course, the transmission.
